CURL Health; The Beauty of the Spray Tan

It was a cold and wintry day when the team from ZM and Spraytanz ventured out to the CURL office. Nic, our editor, had entered us into the ZM competition to get free spray tans for everyone at the office, but on the day of their pending visit, we were all feeling just a little apprehensive about the idea. Not sure whether it was the thought of possibly turning orange or the idea of being naked inside a rather small tent with a complete stranger, but the butterflies were definitely circling.

For those of you who are not so familiar with the ZM crew, they are a team to be reckoned with. Bridget and Dan are the Black Thunder drivers and are often seen out and about in the summer spreading the sounds of ZM to our streets. They are joined for their promotional work by the rather charismatic Mark Hewlett. Mark's original claim to fame was when he won Fear Factor International, but since moving from South Africa to New Zealand. Mark has carved a place for himself in the New Zealand promo scene. They were joined by the gorgeous girls from Spraytanz, Nicki and Jade. It turned out that Jade was the daughter of an old friend I had known in the Mount, so we spent some time catching up over lunch.

After demolishing the Subway sandwiches, compliments of the ZM crew, and a few glasses of bubbly, compliments of our boss, we felt ready to get naked and down to business! Nic did the honorable thing and went first, while Withane and I gathered a bit more Dutch courage and chatted nervously about what was in store.

Less than 10 minutes later a completely different looking Nic reappeared. She was golden brown and looked like she had just got back from a week in the Tropics. She looked absolutely amazing. So it was with decidedly less trepidation that I followed Jade into the tanning tent set up in Withane’s office and was handed a paper G-string!! I can tell you that it was definitely not a pretty sight and I’m not sure whether or not I was glad that I had known Jade for many years or that I wished she was someone I would never ever see again. (Mark, by contrast, wore one of the G-strings as a fashion accessory for the duration of his visit.)

The next 10 minutes was filled with Jade spraying a mist of tanning solution onto my rather pasty body while suggesting I move myself into some rather strange positions. Apart from feeling a little silly, the whole experience was painless. I reemerged from the tent glowing a healthy golden brown and feeling absolutely fantastic. It’s amazing how a bit of colour on the skin can make you feel and all this achieved without any of the harmful damage a natural tan can cause.

If you are wondering whether we turned into three orange people then you can be rest assured that our tans looked nothing but natural. Spraytanztanning solution comes in three shades so they use the one best suited to your skin to give you the most natural looking tan.

So how does it work and how long does it last?
Well according to the Spraytanz website, the tanning solution contains a colourless, three-carbon sugar (Dihydroxyacetone or DHA) that produces a darkening effect when applied to the skin. The active ingredients in the solution start to develop about three to four hours after application and lasts as long as your outer layer of skin does (usually between five and seven days).

We were told that for best results we should exfoliate the night before they sprayed us and not shower until the following morning and then moisturise, moisturise, moisturise! Unfortunately only Withane was able to follow this regime and her tan still looked great after almost a week. Nic showered the first night and still looked good for at least five days. I, on the other hand, was tempted into the spa that afternoon (despite being told this was a no-no) by my three year old and decided that the pleasures of my little boy were more important than the maintenance of my spray tan. Consequently I didn't get quite the longevity out of my tan that I should have, but the experience was still well worth it.

The next day in the office we all decided getting a Spraytanz would be money well spent, especially if you had a special occasion to go to, such as a ball, wedding or whatever. For around $40 - $50 (way less than a hair cut) it made us all feel like a million bucks and is something we would all highly recommend.

Q. Why do you recommend Spraytanz?
The hassle free nature of Mobile Spraytanz is the most appealing feature for me. I was a competitive dancer for years and fake tanning for competition day was always a pain, with rubber gloves and bottles of tanning creams!

Caroline holds down a full time job in advertising sales, but fell in love with Spraytanz after a chance meeting with Managing Partner Lori Hope.

Q. Why become a Spraytanz 'Go Mobile' Spray Tanner?
I went to see Lori (M.D.) to sell her some advertising space for the Erotica Expo in mid 2005. In the process of talking with her I found out more about the product, had a free application and really loved it. I walked out with a feeling of euphoria, like after a good haircut but better. It's something positive for people, it spreads a bit of joy, it's safe, a great business opportunity and I really believe in it.

Q. How have you found it?
Well for a start I haven't needed to advertise. As soon as people find out I’m doing mobile spraytanning with Spraytanz they're setting up appointments and referring their friends to me as well.

Gaby Judd 'Talk of the Town' Mobile beauty and tanning technician - Call 09-416-5667 to book your appointment

Gaby is a young, Auckland based, mother of two. Having stopped work in 2002 to raise and care for her children, Gaby has recently returned to the workforce as a Mobile Tanning Technician.

Q. Why become a Spraytanz Mobile Tanning Technician?
I'd been wanting to go back to work for a while, but I needed something that would allow me to work around my children - definitely not something I could do with the usual nine to five job. I've got a background in beauty therapy and mobile spray-tanning was a great way of using of that and staying in touch with the industry.

Q. How have you found it?
For a start, being your own boss is just brilliant. I do most of my work after 5pm, or on weekends which allows me to work as well as take care of my children.

All I need to take with me is the Spray Tan cubicle, MiniMist spray system, spray-gun, tanning solution and some paper towels for the clean-up afterwards. It takes maybe 15 minutes to set up and talk with the client about what they expect, five to ten minutes to spray the solution on and another 15 minutes to clean up and pack the gear away.

The support I've received from Spraytanz has been great. They've given me help with my technique for spraying, helped me organise business cards. They've got a wonderful product, especially in the way it looks and feels. It gives a nice colour [after being sprayed] and it's easy to see where it's been applied.

Q. Why do you think Spraytanz appeals to so many people?
It's definitely convenient for clients to be able to have a Spraytanz mobile tanning technician come to them; it means they don’t have to worry about taking their makeup off, or going around with no makeup after they’ve been sprayed. Plus, a lot of people don’t want to use sun beds or sit out in the sun to get a tan.

Most of my work comes through word of mouth – friends, family or colleagues of people I’ve sprayed. I’m trying to keep things small until my son’s gone to day-care, so I can’t afford to get too busy just yet, but there’s a huge amount of potential business out there.

The team at Spraytanz have put a lot of time an effort into their solution formula; the design of the equipment; and the business model itself; and that makes me feel good about working with them.
